Αν τα ’90s μας δίδαξαν κάτι, είναι πως το μέλλον δεν έμοιαζε ποτέ τόσο... βρώμικο! Το “New Crime City” του 1994 είναι ένα από εκείνα τα «χαμένα διαμάντια» του βιντεοκλάμπ — μια ταινία που συνδυάζει sci-fi, δράση και gritty ρεαλισμό, σε ένα μείγμα που θυμίζει Escape from New York και Mad Max, αλλά με το ακατέργαστο DNA των χαμηλών budget παραγωγών που αγαπήσαμε.
Στο επίκεντρο βρίσκεται ο Rick Stone (Rick Rossovich), ένας πρώην αστυνομικός που στέλνεται σε μια τεράστια φυλακή-πόλη του μέλλοντος για να εντοπίσει έναν θανατηφόρο ιό και να σώσει τον κυβερνήτη. Το New Crime City είναι ένας τόπος χωρίς νόμους, όπου οι συμμορίες ελέγχουν τα πάντα, τα όπλα είναι νόμισμα και η επιβίωση είναι πολυτέλεια.
Η σκηνοθεσία του Jonathan Winfrey (γνωστού από τις παραγωγές της Concorde/New Horizons του Roger Corman) δίνει στην ταινία αυτό το χαρακτηριστικό “Corman touch”: γρήγορη δράση, εκρηκτικό μοντάζ, neon φωτισμοί και μουσική που θυμίζει κασέτα synth των late ’80s.
🔹 Φουτουρισμός με ανακυκλωμένα σκηνικά:
Πολλά από τα σκηνικά της ταινίας είχαν χρησιμοποιηθεί και σε άλλες παραγωγές της Concorde, όπως το “Droid Gunner” και το “Prototype X29A”. Για να δείχνουν «νέα», η ομάδα απλώς τα έβαψε με γκράφιτι και neon φωτισμούς.
🔹 Ο Rick Rossovich σε ρόλο-έκπληξη:
Γνωστός από το “Top Gun” και το “Terminator”, ο Rossovich δέχτηκε τον ρόλο γιατί ήθελε “κάτι πιο σκοτεινό και διαφορετικό”. Σε συνέντευξη του 1995 είχε πει:

“Ήταν σαν να παίζω τον Snake Plissken σε μια έκδοση που δεν είχε χρήματα, αλλά είχε πάθος.”
🔹 Low budget, high energy:
Ο προϋπολογισμός δεν ξεπέρασε το 1 εκατομμύριο δολάρια, αλλά η παραγωγή κατάφερε να δώσει την ψευδαίσθηση μιας πολύ μεγαλύτερης ταινίας χάρη σε ευφυή μοντάζ και χρήση νυχτερινών σκηνών για να κρύψει τα εφέ.
🔹 Το τέλος που άλλαξε:
Αρχικά, το φινάλε ήταν πιο σκοτεινό — ο ήρωας πέθαινε από τον ιό, θυσιάζοντας τον εαυτό του. Ο Roger Corman, ωστόσο, επέμεινε σε ένα πιο “heroic ending”, για να επιτρέψει πιθανή συνέχεια (η οποία δεν γυρίστηκε ποτέ).

Οι φίλοι των ’90s B-movies τη λατρεύουν για τον ωμό της χαρακτήρα, τις σκηνές δράσης χωρίς CGI, και την χαρακτηριστική “Corman αισθητική” που έκανε τις VHS εποχής να μοιάζουν πιο αυθεντικές από τα σημερινά blockbusters.
Μπορεί να μην είχε τα λεφτά του Hollywood, αλλά είχε κάτι πολύ πιο σπάνιο: ψυχή και attitude.

If the ’90s taught us anything, it’s that the future never looked this… dirty! “New Crime City” (1994) is one of those lost video club treasures — a film that mixes sci-fi, action, and gritty realism, blending the vibe of Escape from New York and Mad Max, but with the raw DNA of the low-budget productions we all loved.
At the center of it all is Rick Stone (Rick Rossovich), a former cop sent into a massive prison city of the future to track down a deadly virus and save the governor. New Crime City is a lawless wasteland where gangs run everything, weapons are currency, and survival is a luxury.
Directed by Jonathan Winfrey (known for his work with Roger Corman’s Concorde/New Horizons), the film carries that unmistakable “Corman touch”: fast-paced action, explosive editing, neon lighting, and a synth soundtrack straight out of a late ’80s cassette.
🔹 Futurism with recycled sets:
Many of the film’s sets were reused from other Concorde productions such as “Droid Gunner” and “Prototype X29A.” To make them look “new,” the crew simply repainted them with graffiti and added neon lighting.
🔹 Rick Rossovich in a surprising role:
Known from Top Gun and The Terminator, Rossovich accepted the role because he wanted “something darker and different.” In a 1995 interview, he said:

“It was like playing Snake Plissken in a version that had no money—but had heart.”
🔹 Low budget, high energy:
With a budget barely reaching one million dollars, the production still managed to create the illusion of a much bigger movie, thanks to clever editing and the smart use of night scenes to hide the limited effects.
🔹 The ending that changed:
Originally, the film had a much darker ending — the hero was supposed to die from the virus, sacrificing himself. However, Roger Corman insisted on a more “heroic ending,” leaving room for a potential sequel (which was never made).
Fans of ’90s B-movies love it for its raw tone, its practical action scenes without CGI, and that distinctive “Corman aesthetic” that made VHS-era films feel more authentic than today’s digital blockbusters.
It may not have had Hollywood’s money, but it had something far rarer — soul and attitude.
